Big and powerful; crams plenty of ripe currant, prune and chocolate aromas and flavors into a solid frame that coats the mouth with tannin.

I really like this wine, but then again, I am a big fan of '88. That said, if you are not a fan of green and vegetal flavors in your BDX, then this is not for you. This shows lots of saddle leather, tobacco, leaf litter and bell pepper notes, with enough cassis fruit to add some balance, and those classic '88 tannins on the back end (which are pretty well integrated at this point). I love it.

Color. Bordeaux red. Good intensity. Slight evolution. Nose. Clean. Medium intensity. Very toasted. Too much. Animal. Soft attack, not very present, developing on a round-shaped structure, medium-bodied, quite fatty, a little soft evolving on well-balanced but simple tannins. Slightly warm finish. Medium length.

Château D'Armailhac
Château D'Armailhac

In the 17th century, the Armailhacq brothers owned plots in Pauillac. It was in the 18th century that their descendants decided to plant vines there. Several d'Armailhacq family members, whose spelling changed regularly, subsequently succeeded one another at the head of Château d'Armailhac.

In 1855, the château was classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 Médoc Classification, under the name of Château Mouton d'Armailhacq. It was also during this period that Count Ferrand became the owner of the estate and created the limited company of Domaine de Mouton d'Armailhacq. In 1989, Château d'Armailhac took the name by which it is known today, Château d'Armailhac. The label features a small Bacchus, paying tribute to the vine. The 50 hectares of the estate, located between Châteaux Pontet-Canet and Mouton Rothschild, house in their outbuildings the technical and agricultural facilities necessary for the wine of Château d'Armailhac and that of Mouton Rothschild.
