CHÂTEAU BEYCHEVELLE 2000

Optimal tasting window: 2007 - 2044

Château Beychevelle 2000 is an excellent wine. Composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (49%) and complemented by Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (6%), the wine is very successful. A delicate classified growth with a floral nose, also marked by fruity notes (blueberry and redcurrant). On the palate, the attack is soft, delicate and savory. To be kept for several more years.

Intensity and depth, this shows just how well built the 2000 vintage was in its youth, and how slowly it has come around. Now at the point where the tannins are starting to melt into the structure but still very much cradling the fruit. Cigar box and tobacco leaf, grilled coffee beans and mandarin peel, plenty of blackberry and bilberry fruits, great quality, full of St Julien finesse, ready to drink but with decades ahead, love this, and it’s an upscore from my last tasting as it comes into its drinking window.

A wine I've tasted several times i the past (and bought en primeur) showing a much more firm. lean, edgy liquorice and black plum fruit on the nose, with cherry and mineral edges adding a lot more nervosity than in previous tastings. Less opulent for sure on the palate, but there are reserves here, with that espresso-supported black fruit all constrained by grippy tannins and a liquorice and damson-skin severity. Over the course of an hour this starts to fill out, with the mid-palate developing a much more lush, blackcurranty fruit and hints of chocolaty richness. This is in a slightly awkward stage, but I am very happy to have some tucked away.

Wonderful floral and blackberry aromas follow through to a compressed palate of full-bodied tannins and ripe fruit. Yet very fine and silky on the palate. Best Beychevelle I have had in years.

If any wine could be described as beautiful, then Beychevelle is beautiful. Its flavors of liquorice and blackcurrant are smooth and opulent, well proportioned. The texture is rich, ripe and generous.

Supple, round and easy to drink now with evolved flavors of cedar, dried currant and tobacco. Well crafted but unexciting Beychevelle with sweet, subtle fruit that is enjoyable now but should age well over the next decade.

Last bottle. Crimson red, nose of spicy cassis, lots of earth tones, red currants. Medium to full bodied, some rusticity in this wine typical of Beychevelle pré modern era, finishes tannic and long despite two hours in decanter. Still young.

Medium ruby garnet, delicate ochre rim. Hints of nougat and caramel, ripe sweet fruit, fine plum compote. Substantial, quite sweet and powerful, aromatic in character, almost like a small Vintage Port, very accessible, delicate bitter chocolate note, good further development potential.

The nose offers tobacco, blackberry, cassis, wet earth, cedar chest and cassis. On the palate, the wine is firm, fresh and traditional. This is well made and developing nicely, but there is a lack of excitement in the wine that would make me want to open another bottle. Tasters that prefer less ripe, lean, traditional or classic Bordeaux wine, will like this a lot more than I did.

Mid crimson with lots of sweetness. Very gentle and a definite 2000. Good vintage definition from Beychevelle! Easy and only very slightly inky. Long and rich.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle watches over the Gironde at the southern tip of Saint-Julien, where the legend of the "lower your sail" gave it its name and the griffin-prowed ship its emblem. Classified growth in 1855, it draws from its deep Garonne gravels a predominantly cabernet sauvignon blend, complemented by merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, and owes its nickname of "the Versailles of the Médoc" to its pleasure château.

Vinified plot by plot and aged in oak barrels, the wines combine silky tannins, dark fruit and great ageing potential. The estate's landmark vintages range from 1982 and 1986 to 1989 for the great classics, then 2005 and the 2016 vintage, the first to emerge from the new plot-by-plot winery. L'Amiral de Beychevelle offers the most accessible expression of the estate.
