The 4th growth Beychevelle from 1985 has been one of my favourite ever wines for three decades now, a bottle from a case bought around 1989 having been drunk every few years. This the last of the dozen. Now the colour is still a lovely ruby, a hint of brick on the rim, though the nose and palate both show some age. There's a little autumn leaf, vegetal note that was not there on the previous bottle seven or eight years ago, but it does not detract: there is still so much to like. The palate still has that quite sumptuous, plummy fruit depth and swirling smokiness and hints of fudge and chocolate generosity, and the framework of tannins and now slightly more angular acidity give it tension and drive, making for a really enjoyable wine.

Another very solid bottle from this batch. A bit of VA on this one but blew off with air for the most part. Bottle 5 or 6 out of 10 375ml purchased a few years back. Happy with this but this wine is definitely better out of 750 at this point.

Stylish, with vanilla, spice and cherry aromas and flavors, very silky texture and a long vanilla finish.

Information on the vintage 1985 red Bordeaux: This vintage seems to encapsulate all that is good about Bordeaux : its weight, its balance, its character. It is certainly my favourite vintage of this splendid decade typifying claret at its best. I am more than ever convinced that this is one of the most perfect vintages, both for drinking now and keeping.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle is a fourth growth classified cru (official 1855 Médoc wine classification) from the Saint-Julien appellation. Located on the left bank of the Médoc, the vineyard covers 92 hectares of vines. The vines are approximately 30 years old and benefit from sustainable farming practices.

Château Beychevelle is a classic Saint-Julien: roundness, richness of aromas, and power. The classic harmony of the greatest Médoc wines, which deserves much more than the fourth growth status in the 1855 classification. The best vintages of Beychevelle are undoubtedly 1982 and the 1986 vintage. The wines from 1989, 2000 and 2005 grand crus are equally exceptional. Finally, the château has also produced great vintages such as 2009, 2010 and the 2015 vintage.
