The history of Château Boyd-Cantenac
The history of Château Boyd-Cantenac begins in 1754, when Squire Jacques Boyd acquired the property and gave it his name. He came from a prominent family of merchants originally from Belfast, Scotland, some of whom had settled in Bordeaux as early as the 17th century.
Even at that time, its wine enjoyed a fine reputation and was classified as a third growth of Cantenac by broker Labadie as early as 1776.
The Château Boyd-Cantenac vineyard was purchased in 1806 by a Bordeaux merchant and wine enthusiast, John Lewis Brown, who was also of Scottish origin and married to Jacques Boyd's granddaughter.
Following financial difficulties, the Brown heirs sold the property in 1843 to Mr. Gromard, a banker, and Mr. Verrière. This sale marked the beginning of the vineyard's division into two: Château Cantenac-Brown and Château Boyd-Cantenac.
After the epidemics of the mid-19th century that devastated the vineyard, Château Boyd-Cantenac ceased to exist before being reconstituted by the Laurent and then Ginestet families who succeeded each other at the beginning of the following century.
Since 1932 and now for 4 generations, Château Boyd-Cantenac has belonged to the Guillemet family, who also own Château Pouget since 1906. Today, the two estates share the winemaking facilities.
Owner and technical director Lucien Guillemet, a trained oenologist, works outside the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux which promotes the region's grand crus worldwide.
It can boast of not using chemical fertilizers in its vineyards for over 40 years.
What are the characteristics of Château Boyd Cantenac wines?
A small property of 17 hectares, Château Boyd-Cantenac benefits from poor, well-draining siliceous gravel soil that facilitates deep rooting of the forty-year-old vines.
This soil has the ability to retain heat during the day to release it at night, allowing for excellent maturity and a great concentration of grape aromas.
The vineyard, managed according to organic farming principles although not certified, is planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%), and Petit Verdot (5%).
The wines of Château Boyd-Cantenac reveal the specificities of their terroir and are recognized as being among the most characteristic growths of the Margaux appellation.
The grand red wine Château Boyd-Cantenac, with its subtle and refined aromatic bouquet, combines elegance, complexity, and density, with excellent freshness and length on the palate. It requires significant cellar aging to fully reveal itself. It's an excellent wine for aging at a reasonable price.
The estate also produces several second wines that are lighter and fruitier than the first wine Château Boyd-Cantenac, made from younger vines; Jacques Boyd, La Croix de Boyd-Cantenac and Joséphine de Boyd. All under the Margaux appellation.
Château Boyd-Cantenac also produces a harmonious wine, Clos Maucaillou, under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, made primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
