Beautiful dark color. On the nose, it seems to go into a library of old books. The palate is pleasant, well balanced with good acidity. Good to drink now. We perceive that this wine is not young but it has aged gracefully.
A very good vintage indeed, producing rich, meaty and fairly substantial wines of a contrasting style to the 1962s and 1966s. Following an exceptionally hard winter, perfect flowering in June, a hot, almost too hot, summer with some drought conditions reducing the crop but perfect ripening weather, alternating rain and sun, for an excellent harvest from 18 September. It was immediately recognized as a first-rate vintage and record prices were reached at the Hospices de Beaune auction.
