Falstaff February - 2015

Very good color depth – firm core with a hint of ocher at the edge. The nose brings notes of olives and dried herbs, dark caramel, orange peel and cassis and with air a hint of mint. Juicy texture on the palate, with minty lemon nuances and finely spiced tannins that are slowly but surely reaching the end of their viability. A blackberry touch on the finish enhances the pleasant extract sweetness.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Still a spectacular wine, the 1961 defies mortality. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orangeamber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish.

Cork was in bad shape but after a gentle decant this wine really opened up. Hard to fathom that it is 62+ years old. Beautiful nose of pepper, tea, leather, and spices. Palate a bit thin as expected but delivered some flavors of citrus (a tad sour), spices, raspberry, and chocolate. Some tannin structure remaining but not strong. Exceeded expectations!

Cigar box, wet earth, cedar chest and cassis on the nose. The wine is better on the palate with its fresh, sweet cherry, spicy cassis flavors and medium bodied, fully developed character. Each bottle is different, especially with 50 years of age. It’s important to note, I’ve had much better bottles and a few that were worse. Such is life.

Information on the vintage 1961 red Bordeaux: A great vintage often compared to the 1945 for the two have several things in common. Opinion vary, some sure of the '61 superiority, some - as I do - considering the '45s greater. The risk is that the tannin will outlive the fruit. Nevertheless some fabulous wines made.

Jancis Robinson December - 2016

Another wine from the John Avery sale and a distinct step up from the Plince 1961. Richer and sweeter – so much so that I took it for a right-bank wine. Dark garnet colour. After a while in the glass it dried out a bit. Firm and direct. On the way down with a certain dustiness dominating the fruit but attractively savoury. And lovely when first poured.

Château Lynch Bages
Château Lynch Bages

Château Lynch-Bages is one of the great names of the Pauillac appellation, classified as a Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Located on the historic plateau of Bages, in the heart of the Médoc, this wine has embodied for several generations the controlled power and qualitative consistency that make the reputation of great Bordeaux wines.

The history of Château Lynch-Bages begins in the 18th century with the Lynch family, of Irish origin, before the property was acquired in the 20th century by the Cazes family. Since the acquisition by Jean-Charles Cazes in 1939, then under the impetus of Jean-Michel Cazes and today Jean-Charles Cazes, the estate has continuously strengthened its identity and international reputation. This family continuity is a central element of Château Lynch-Bages' uniqueness.

The vineyard sits on deep Garonne gravel, ideally drained, an emblematic terroir of Pauillac, particularly favorable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the predominant grape variety in the blend. It gives birth to structured, refined wines built for aging, combining aromatic intensity, tannic precision and finesse.

Vintages such as Château Lynch-Bages 1982, Château Lynch-Bages 1995, Château Lynch-Bages 2000, Château Lynch-Bages 1989, Château Lynch-Bages 2009 or Château Lynch-Bages 2010 illustrate the remarkable consistency of the estate and its essential status among the collectible wines of Pauillac.
