Expert's opinions

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The nose is impressive after three decades with melted tar, a touch of peppermint and delineated black fruit that seem to gain intensity with each passing moment in the glass. Strangely those secondary notes of bay leaf and dried herbs make way for more primal fruit-derived scents with aeration! The palate does not disappoint. Medium rather than full-bodied, beautifully defined tannins and supremely well-judged acidity, this Lynch-Bages is just so well balanced. Hints of black truffle and sandalwood unfold towards the finish that has disarming purity and great persistence.

Shockingly Ruby for a wine of this age. The color belies its age. On the nose, soft crushed rose petal red fruits, acacia, musk, faint cedar and just a hint of sweet tobacco and dark cherry, gravel, wet stones, blackberry, cocoa. Dissolves into raisinated fruits. This wine is just getting started. It’s lovely now but has a long life ahead of it!

Strong ruby, slightly lightened rim. Wonderful nose, almost beguiling, wilted blossoms, ripe cherry fruit, green peppers on top, complex, develops in the glass, mocha aromas and a little black tea are added, wonderful château. The palate is open-hearted, very accessible, creamy texture, some tannin and a well-integrated acidity, warm, full-bodied but balanced. Ends with a long finish on dark fruit and ripe plum fruit. Wonderfully ripened and still in good shape. Now until 2030+.

Falstaff January - 2010

Medium ruby ??garnet, wider ochre rim. On the nose, fine nuances of cassis, dark berries, delicate orange zest, very inviting, multifaceted bouquet. On the palate, full-bodied, sweet and elegant, fine, perfectly integrated tannins, lingers very well, nougat on the finish, delicate hints of cranberries, overall very youthful, good aging potential, perfect to drink now, a classic Claret from Pauillac, shows great length and has a future.

This ready to go Pauillac starts off with in all the right ways, with its cedar chest, cassis, tobacco and forest floor profile. Smooth, soft, medium/full bodied, with a blast of cassis and tobacco and cassis in the finish. There is no reason to wait for more aging, this is clearly ready, willing and able to deliver.

We had a case of this once but finished it ages ago, it was so delicious. Three bottles, all bought recently from Berry Bros, were opened. The first was stunning, absolutely all the subtlety, balance and ripe fruit you expect from a top claret.

Château Lynch Bages
Château Lynch Bages

Château Lynch-Bages produces fifth classified growths of Médoc in the 1855 classification and a second wine called Echo de Lynch-Bages which is not classified. Under the Pauillac appellation, the Château Lynch-Bages vineyard covers more than 1,200 hectares.

The wine of Chateau Lynch-Bages is in line with the great Pauillac. Composed mostly of Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. It is also distinguished by its wealth. Generous in his youth, he played in his maturity to more flavor and complexity. The style of wine Chateau Lynch-Bages refined over the years, gaining flexibility and softness, while regular wine settles in time.

Until today, Chateau Lynch-Bages is characterized by its extraordinary standard of quality. Powerful, sleek and open, the wine vintage after vintage acquires greater accuracy, combining the distinction in nature, which bases its hedonistic personality.
