Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The nose is impressive after three decades with melted tar, a touch of peppermint and delineated black fruit that seem to gain intensity with each passing moment in the glass. Strangely those secondary notes of bay leaf and dried herbs make way for more primal fruit-derived scents with aeration! The palate does not disappoint. Medium rather than full-bodied, beautifully defined tannins and supremely well-judged acidity, this Lynch-Bages is just so well balanced. Hints of black truffle and sandalwood unfold towards the finish that has disarming purity and great persistence.

The wine was fully evolved, fragrant, sweeter, very positive.

Shockingly Ruby for a wine of this age. The color belies its age. On the nose, soft crushed rose petal red fruits, acacia, musk, faint cedar and just a hint of sweet tobacco and dark cherry, gravel, wet stones, blackberry, cocoa. Dissolves into raisinated fruits. This wine is just getting started. It’s lovely now but has a long life ahead of it!

Strong ruby, slightly lightened rim. Magnificent nose, almost beguiling, wilted flowers, ripe cherry fruit, green pepper over it, complex, builds in the glass, mocha aromas and some black tea join in, magnificent. The palate is open-hearted, very accessible, creamy texture, still some tannin and a superbly integrated acidity, warm, full-bodied but balanced. Finishes long and lingering on dark fruits and ripe plum fruit. Wonderfully matured and still in great shape. Now until 2030+.

Medium ruby garnet, broader ocher rim. On the nose fine nuances of cassis, dark berries, delicate orange zest, very inviting, multi-faceted bouquet. On the palate substantial, sweet and elegant, fine, perfectly integrated tannins, adheres very well, nougat on the finish, delicately of lingonberries, appears very youthful overall, good aging potential, perfect to drink now, a classic claret from Pauillac, shows great length and has a future.

This ready to go Pauillac starts off with in all the right ways, with its cedar chest, cassis, tobacco and forest floor profile. Smooth, soft, medium/full bodied, with a blast of cassis and tobacco and cassis in the finish. There is no reason to wait for more aging, this is clearly ready, willing and able to deliver.

We had a case of this once but finished it ages ago, it was so delicious. Three bottles, all bought recently from Berry Bros, were opened. The first was stunning, absolutely all the subtlety, balance and ripe fruit you expect from a top claret.

Château Lynch Bages
Château Lynch Bages

Château Lynch-Bages is one of the great names of the Pauillac appellation, classified as a Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Located on the historic plateau of Bages, in the heart of the Médoc, this wine has embodied for several generations the controlled power and qualitative consistency that make the reputation of great Bordeaux wines.

The history of Château Lynch-Bages begins in the 18th century with the Lynch family, of Irish origin, before the property was acquired in the 20th century by the Cazes family. Since the acquisition by Jean-Charles Cazes in 1939, then under the impetus of Jean-Michel Cazes and today Jean-Charles Cazes, the estate has continuously strengthened its identity and international reputation. This family continuity is a central element of Château Lynch-Bages' uniqueness.

The vineyard sits on deep Garonne gravel, ideally drained, an emblematic terroir of Pauillac, particularly favorable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the predominant grape variety in the blend. It gives birth to structured, refined wines built for aging, combining aromatic intensity, tannic precision and finesse.

Vintages such as Château Lynch-Bages 1982, Château Lynch-Bages 1995, Château Lynch-Bages 2000, Château Lynch-Bages 1989, Château Lynch-Bages 2009 or Château Lynch-Bages 2010 illustrate the remarkable consistency of the estate and its essential status among the collectible wines of Pauillac.
