Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
For whatever reason, the now-mature 1978, while fruity, quite charming, and soft, never quite had the depth and dimension of the 1979. Now taking on some amberorange color, this wine has a herbaceous, oaky fragrance, soft, loosely knit flavors, and a smooth finish.

Very top of the cork still dry. A medium garnet with a translucent rim in the glass. Almost no browning. Wonderful nose: fresh slightly green notes, sous bois, cigar box. On the palate a quintessential, old school grave, leafy but still with good fruit concentration. Tannins resolved. Great Haut Bailly!

Château Haut Bailly

The Château Haut-Bailly is a french estate that produce Graves grands crus classés in Pessac-Leognan appellation.

Château Haut-Bailly  is one of the few major properties to produce only red. In 1998, the Sanders family sold the vineyard to an American banker, Bob Wilmers, but Veronique Sanders continues to manage. Tannins wise, almost discreet, a delicate balance, "without anything too" as he likes to say, Jean Sanders, define the incomparable style Haut Bailly. Nothing conspicuous in this wine that embodies the finesse of Bordeaux.
