CLOS SAINT JEAN Deus ex Machina 2005

Anecdote about this vintage: "God out of the machine" is what the Latin expression "Deus-Ex-Machina" literally means, in other words, a divine intervention that radically changes the course of things. In the theatrical world, "Deus-Ex-Machina" translates to an unexpected reversal of the situation thanks to an external event that nothing foreshadowed. At Clos Saint Jean, the name of this vintage perfectly symbolizes the changes in direction that have been made since the 2003 vintage.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
I’ve been lucky enough to have the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus ex Machina numerous times over the past year, and while still youthful, it’s starting to shows hints of evolution and secondary nuances. Cassis, crushed rocks, graphite, beef blood and iron-like aromas and flavors are all present here, and it offers incredible depth and richness on the palate, with gorgeous purity, masses of tannin and a rock-star finish. A wine that could make you run out of adjectives, it too is another wine that goes flying off the scale.

WOW! Mouth-coating, teeth staining levels of concentration here. The texture is pure velvet. As big as this is, there is freshness, balance, and complexity. The ripe, dark red fruit shows a beautiful purity. The finish goes on for over 50 seconds. This is no shy sister of a wine. It leaves a serious impression. There is nothing old school about this blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre. But I loved it!

Wine Spectator April - 2008
Wine Spectator
A lush, modern style, with silky layers of raspberry ganache and spice leading the way for notes of linzer torte, hoisin sauce and incense. Yet the accessiblity is deceptive, as this really picks up grip and steam, leaving a lingering note of Port reduction on the velvety, black fruit-filled finish.
