CHÂTEAU BRANAIRE DUCRU 1996

Tasting note: Pure delight, archetype of a grand cru, very elegant and easy to drink. A dense wine with a beautifully complex nose dominated by spices. Its color is still just as magnificent. This is undoubtedly a great Saint-Julien with lots of freshness!

Anecdote about this wine: Heat wave in June. July had beautiful weather, cool at night. The sun remained present, but regular rains made an appearance, according to weather reports. In September, the good weather continued, not a drop of water for three weeks. It's the late season that would make this vintage's reputation.

Grape variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~70%), Merlot (~22%), Cabernet Franc (~4%), Petit Verdot (~4%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Maturity: Ready to drink

Food and Wine Pairing: Grilled red meat, game, grilled white meat and hard cheese

Dark red color, intense and slightly evolved. Aromatic nose, with scents of ripe fruit, meat, but also alcohol. Soft on the attack and the wine develops smooth, juicy, flavorful, elongated in its structure and fine in its tannins. Finish slightly firm and warm, but without harshness.

Deep crimson with some development at the rim. Low-key nose, only starting to unfurl but there is a promising amount of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated fruit here. Not the subtlest wine but quite lip smacking and with quite a future ahead of it.

Château Branaire Ducru
Château Branaire Ducru

Château Branaire Ducru is a fourth growth classified (official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification) from the Saint-Julien appellation in Médoc. The vineyard covers nearly 60 hectares of vines. Château Branaire-Ducru is now one of the jewels of Saint Julien. It is highly sought after for its very pure red fruit. Its typical composition, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, opens with bright aromas of raspberry and blackberry, before becoming more complex on the palate with delicate nuances of mineral, pencil lead, smoke and spring flowers... The Château also produces a second wine: Duluc de Branaire Ducru.

The best vintages of Château Branaire Ducru are 1975, 1982 grand cru wines, 1989, the 1995 vintage and the 1996 vintage. The wines from 2000, 2001, 2003 vintage and 2005 are also exceptional. Finally, the grand crus from 2009, 2010 vintage and the 2015 vintage are great vintages.
