Our opinion on the 1943 vintage: a vintage of great quality.

In Bordeaux, the 1943 vintage is often considered as the best vintage of the war. Due to good weather conditions, a hot and dry summer and beautiful flowering, the 1943 vintage is excellent. The reds are pleasant, rich, fruity and the whites are also rich and vigorous, with a very dark color. The 1943 Sauternes surpass the previous vintage, with sweet and refined wines.

In Burgundy, the wines have body and exceptional aging potential. The red Burgundies are flavorful, well-structured, mature and still very beautiful. The white Burgundies are rather short but still interesting.

In the Rhône Valley, the harvest was excellent in the north. The result was powerful, generous wines. These are excellent age-worthy wines, and they can still offer plenty of pleasure.

In Champagne, cool weather and showers made flowering difficult, yet the quality of the vintage is very good.

Our advice on buying a 1943 wine.

In Bordeaux, all the wines are excellent—red, white or sweet, the choice is yours. The vintage’s best appellations are Pauillac, Margaux, Pessac-Léognan and Saint-Emilion. In Sauternes, Château Suduiraut 1943 and Château Climens 1943 are powerful and still enjoyable to drink.

In Burgundy, we recommend the Romanée Conti, La Tâche and Richebourg appellations, which stand out for their superior quality. The reds reveal notes of damp earth, forest floor and mushroom.
