Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com Exciting in its bohemian profile, Sassicaia 2004 offers a complex and decidedly vibrant sensory profile. Hibiscus flowers meet geraniums, elderflowers, acacia and calamint. In the background, orange juice dominates forcefully, leaving small spaces for hints of white truffle, ginseng root, saffron and chopped almonds. The explosiveness of the base notes is pressing and thrills, revealing memories of fresh oregano, marigold and broom. The liveliness is disconcerting and the complexity is unique in its genre. Full body, perfectly ripe tannins of a silky nature and a finish of great grace in the nobility of a thoroughbred that exalts itself as soon as it comes of age. There is still a long road ahead. Drink now or grow old.

The best Sassicaia of the last 10 years, the 2004 vintage is an outstanding achievement. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc highlight the beauty of Tuscany and portray the region in terms of thick chocolate fudge, succulent cherry and currant, exotic spice and vanilla seed. Beyond those big aromas are little teasers: blue flowers, Mediterranean herbs, cola and light mineral shadings. It's lush and full in the mouth and will hold 20 or 30 years.
