The Côte-Rôtie appellation is the most northerly part of the northern Rhône Valley (which also includes Château Grillet, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray appellations). The vineyard is characterized by very steep slopes that can climb up to 325 m altitude where vines cling to the hillsides with terraces and walls designed by man. Today the Côte-Rôtie appellation is highly coveted and considered to be the best of the Rhône by lovers of fine wines. Guigal, Gerin, Rostaing, Jaboulet or Chapoutier are among the references that bear the appellation at its highest level. In the vineyard there are the Brune coast in the north and the Blonde coast in the south. The first, on clay soils, offers powerful and robust wines. The second, on clay sands, delicate wines. Syrah is the only red grape used, however, it is possible to add viognier up to 20% maximum. Deep red color, delicate nose of violet, raspberry, spicy, the Côte-Rôtie offers a beautiful tannic structure and very long in the mouth. Excellent aging potential. The best vintages in recent years are 1929, 1945, 1949, 1959, 1961, 1969, 1971, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1998, 2009.
