Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Along with the 1986, the 1982 is one of the greatest Talbots ever made. Far more evolved than its stablemate, Gruaud Larose, it exhibits a dense garnet color to the rim along with a huge, sweet, exotic nose of charcoal, beef blood, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. A hint of figs suggests borderline overripeness, but the wine remains fleshy and full-bodied with sweet tannin and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. While fully mature, it should hold for another decade. Release price

Christer Byklum : Bright ruby, thin brick rim. In neck fill, 0,5 cm below cork. Dates, figs, some cedar, tobacco, detailed and nuanced, lovely maturity, lighter but very elegant nose, refined, fine leather, cigars and cigar box. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, detailed, fruit driven, some spices, juicy, leaner bodied, sweet dates and figs, tobacco, lighter bodied, very refined, easy to overlook, long finish. From my father's cellar, bought upon release and never moved. Lovely and classic and utterly charming.

Fully mature, with a nose of tobacco, cigar box, cassis, figs and a hint of jam. The wine is full bodied, concentrated and feels great through the earthy, cassis and cigar wrapper finish.

The dirty nose of the start has given way to the very essence of old Bordeaux, a smoky vegetal rigor (pepper, oak moss, noble wood, tobacco) typical of Pessac, blackberry, spices, damp autumnal undergrowth. Great finesse of matter, fine grain and salinity due to age, here is a St Julien that has emerged from its austerity while dispersing its stigmata to our good memory. 42 years old and in great shape!

This wine was served alongside the Gruaud from the same stable and it really was quite difficult to pick a favourite. There were strong similarities of style: glossy, fruity, friendly, open, something almost Napa-esque about them. Sweet nose and real dancing life. The merest hint of molasses and something very slightly vegetal on the nose – not at all underripe though. Thick and rich, long, a hint of marine notes. Positively oozes charm. I defy anyone not to like this.

Château Talbot

Château Talbot is one of the most iconic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Fourth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate benefits from a strong historical reputation, associated with an accessible, consistent and deeply Médoc style. Its name, inherited from the English Constable John Talbot, a prominent figure in the Hundred Years' War, testifies to the vineyard's antiquity and its roots in Bordeaux history.

The Château Talbot vineyard now extends over approximately 110 hectares, making it one of the largest classified growths in Saint-Julien. The deep gravel soils, resting on clay-sandy subsoils, offer ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, the majority grape variety in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. This parcel diversity allows for the production of balanced, precise and consistent wines.

The style of Château Talbot is distinguished by its readability, its harmonious structure and its clear aromatic expression, combining black fruits, notes of cedar, blond tobacco and sweet spices. Renowned for their relative accessibility in their youth while offering solid aging potential, the estate's wines age with elegance. Vintages such as Château Talbot 1982, Château Talbot 1996, Château Talbot 2000, Château Talbot 1986 illustrate the consistent quality and reliability of this great Saint-Julien wine.
