Deep bright crimson. Not much nose. Rather severe – certainly none of the lushness evident in many other 1989 bordeaux. Sweet palate entry and then dusty tannins. This vintage lacks the freshness that is the usual hallmark of this property. There's a lot of density but not that much precision, and a rather unappetising, hot finish. A disappointment compared with the vintage reputation.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Served by Jean Gautreau at the chateau, the 1989 Sociando-Mallet has those telltale signs of bell pepper and earth on the nose, the fruit in the background at first but developing with aeration, offering blackberry leaf and a touch of Doris plum. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm, rigid tannins and it does not really mellow in the glass, but sits up with a straight back. Masculine but with ample fruit, very fresh and crisp towards the finish. I do not think this will get any better and one could argue that it lacks a little weight, but it is a lovely Sociando.

Slightly one-dimensional but fresh and delicious. Dark-ruby color, and a lovely fresh berry, raspberry and floral nose. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium, fruity aftertaste.

Jean-Marc Quarin April - 1990

Dense, purple-red color with violet hues. Very brilliant. Clean and fruity nose. Intense and quite warm. Spicy and oaky. When swirled, very clean, more intense and quite refined. Nuances of cooked fruits. Clean attack that develops on a straight, fleshy and very supple structure. Evolution towards a nuanced tactile contact, towards a nuanced grain of tannin, still supple, without excluding concentration. Finishes gently to return to remarkably long grilled and oaky aromas. Much reserve with the tender and flattering side of the vintage without excluding tannin and ripe fruit.

Château Sociando Mallet
Château Sociando-Mallet Cru Bourgeois, a wine from Haut-Médoc in Gironde. Château Sociando-Mallet is a wine prized by fine wine enthusiasts, as evidenced by its annual success in en primeur sales. Jean Gautreau's wine is one of the great overlooked wines from the 1855 classification. Because it is not officially part of the nobility of classified growths of the Médoc - even though it competes with more than a few - Château Sociando-Mallet must remain modest in terms of pricing. It thus offers one of the best value-for-money ratios among all great Bordeaux wines!
