Wine Spectator November - 1989

A powerful, rich wine as good as many cru classés. Inky color and intense vanilla, violet and cassis aromas; full-bodied, with great balance, full but integrated tannins and a long finish.

Dark red color. Intense. Young. Beautiful. Magnificent. Medium intensity nose. Fine. Fruity. Young. Blackcurrant. On swirling, fine. Subtle. Ripe. Supple entry on the palate, developing on a round, dense and airy body at the same time. The wine, subtle and very structured but without heaviness, evolves juicy, flavorful, complex, smooth in its rigidity and long. Great homogeneity on the palate. Great length full of aromas. A superb wine, just a little dull in its tannin and which seems to me still quite young. A lovely surprise!

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Deep Bordeaux red, youthful sheen. The nose deep, noble, smoky, dark-fruited, peat, cedarwood, Christmas spices, leather. Masculine, very complex and pleasantly playful. On the palate taut, this bottle is in top form, immensely juicy, also dark-fruited here, some preserved cherries, solid structure, still clearly tannic, well-integrated acidity, astonishingly dense fruit, this still seems almost youthful and very fresh. Long-lasting finish. Another example of a very well-aged Bordeaux.

Jancis Robinson September - 2009

Very deep crimson. Minerals and cassis on the nose. Surely higher volatility than most vintages? A hint of port! Sweet start and lots of rigour and concentration. A fine backbone on this wine! Rather rustic tannins on the finish but there is (just) enough stuffing to convince me that it will last quite a bit longer. Truly a long-distance runner – in slightly severe mode.

(9-1998) It was deeply coloured and still immature; a "classic nose", Cabernet, slightly peppery, good but no development in the glass; dry, crisp fruit, good length, complete but very tannic. On the palate I gave it identical marks to the Margaux and the Haut Brion 1986s.

Château Sociando Mallet
Château Sociando-Mallet Cru Bourgeois, a wine from Haut-Médoc in Gironde. Château Sociando-Mallet is a wine prized by fine wine enthusiasts, as evidenced by its annual success in en primeur sales. Jean Gautreau's wine is one of the great overlooked wines from the 1855 classification. Because it is not officially part of the nobility of classified growths of the Médoc - even though it competes with more than a few - Château Sociando-Mallet must remain modest in terms of pricing. It thus offers one of the best value-for-money ratios among all great Bordeaux wines!
