Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The deep ruby 2004 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape is a structured wine that seems to have closed down from the component part tasting last year. It is medium-bodied with sweet, ripe black cherry and raspberry notes, some crushed rocks, and that distinctive minerality that Rayas seems to provide. The wine reveals more structure this year, and therefore seems to need 2-4 years of bottle age. Stylistically, it is more than just a coincidence that it resembles the 1994, which has turned out very well and is beginning to drink beautifully in the classic Rayas style.

Supple, with very elegant structure guiding the raspberry and cassis fruit, cinnamon, mineral and black tea notes through the lengthy, stylish finish. Very pure, with a great silky mouthfeel, this gains depth as it airs in the glass.

Château Rayas
Château Rayas

The Rayas estate is located in the southern Rhône Valley, in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Founded by Albert Reynaud and passed down through four generations, this intimate family estate spans only 10 hectares and has established itself as a major reference among the great wines of the Rhône.

Long led by Emmanuel Reynaud, who recently passed away, the estate continues to perpetuate his legacy and singular vision of wine. The Reynaud family is also behind Domaine des Tours and Château de Fonsalette. At Rayas, Grenache is the sole grape variety for red wines, while white wines are crafted from Grenache and Clairette, in a style characterized by finesse, purity and terroir expression.

Among Rayas' iconic vintages are the Rayas 1990, Rayas 2006, Rayas 2007, Rayas 2009 and Rayas 1989, essential references of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
