Brownish, luckily still clear and not cloudy. Clear rim was perhaps 4mm wide. Sois-bois, mushroom and wet soil notes. Perhaps about 3-5 years past its zenith, all secondary and tertiaries now. Medium length finish, light tobacco and mainly leathery. With this being a near 40 year vintage, I could not determine the precise blend. I can only assume it is somewhat similar to 62% Cab, 32% Merlot, 4% Cab Franc and 2% Petit Verdot which is how the vines in the estate have been planted.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
An elegant, tasty, stylish wine, the 1985 Pontet-Canet is well colored, with a moderately intense black currant, toasty oak bouquet. While not nearly as concentrated as the 1986, it should still evolve nicely.

Château Pontet Canet

Château Pontet Canet is a Bordeaux wine estate. The 80-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, not far from Château Mouton Rothschild. Château Pontet Canet is classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification.

The wines of Pontet-Canet have always been part of the Médoc legend. Deep ruby, purple, sometimes black, Pontet-Canet wine develops a characteristic nose where black fruits, especially blackcurrant, licorice, prune, notes of figs, cedar and sometimes cocoa blend together. On tasting, the wine combines power and elegance, density and amplitude. With a muscular character, it imposes a serene idea of classicism with this tannic structure that reveals a long and peaceful aging potential. The men of Pontet-Canet continuously pursue the work undertaken more than three centuries ago, bringing, in each era, the most advanced techniques with an eternal concern to improve the quality of the wine while respecting and expressing the purest expression of the terroir.

The wine of Pontet-Canet, as well as the second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet, are exclusively sold by the wine merchants of Bordeaux.
