Wine Enthusiast (01-2003) This is initially a somewhat austere wine, but that derives from the tannins of Saint-Estèphe. Underneath those tannins are solid, chunky fruits and a great generosity and richness.

This has a lovely, supple, elegant feel, with a sandalwood and incense frame around a core of warmed plum and cherry paste flavors. Lightly dusty through the finish, with a lingering mineral hint. A pretty wine, with the balance to hold right here for a bit.—2000 Bordeaux blind retrospective. Drink now through 2020.
