Wine Spectator October - 2003

A superb Champagne and still youthful. Honey, ginger, lemon confit, coffee and mineral aromas and flavors come to mind, all kept focused by a firm, tightly wound structure. The finish is where its pedigree shines through, lingering like warm gingerbread and coffee.

(6-2007) Last June, I found a bottle of KRUG 1988 in my cellar. I had bought several in 2000 for a big party. There was one left. I didn't have an unforgettable memory of it. This time, everything changed. What a superb wine! (I say wine and not champagne). I naively believed its bubbles had deteriorated. Not at all, and what bubbles! Fine, numerous, lively. Incredible! The nose, superbly fresh, pleases with its delicacy. The palate, full, nuanced, refined to the touch, rich in subtle aromas, lets itself be swallowed. The precision of the sensation removes any saturation. The wine finishes, oval in the finale. One glass calls for another. In short, at four dice the aperitif, the joyful liquid disappeared.

19,(8-2007) Opening out on the nose now - no longer the austere, slightly green aromas it once had. Something between blossom and mushrooms. Very Chardonnay. Rapier-like, marked acidity and very crystalline. Very persistent.

Champagne Krug is a Champagne house based in Reims for over 160 years. The Krug house was established in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, originally from Mainz (under French rule - see: History of Mainz). It now belongs to the luxury group LVMH. It is managed by Rémi Krug, representing the fifth generation, and by cellar master Éric Lebel.

Among the main techniques used is vinification in wood in small 205-liter barrels made from Argonne forest oak. Averaging 35 years old, the barrels are repaired by the house's coopers and reused from year to year. According to the cellar master: "The longevity of our champagnes is intimately linked to their time spent in barrels." Krug champagnes are only marketed when mature; in 2005, the 1990 vintage was delivered. For some champagnes, the house releases even older vintages kept for longer periods, such as the 1981 vintage which was disgorged and marketed in 2006 with less than 2,000 bottles under the Krug Collection label.
