 Another insanely good wine that’s a legend in the making is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape XXL, which is almost all Grenache (there’s a splash of Mourvèdre) that spent three years in foudre and barrels before being bottled. Offering a port-like bouquet of blackberry jam, beef blood, black licorice and roasted herbs, it hits the palate with an incredible amount of fruit and texture yet always stays balanced, fresh and lively, with a finish that just won’t quit. This decadent, heady, layered and just about over the top beauty won’t be for everyone (and I’ve had bottles state side that showed more stewed and evolved characteristics), but it’s a singular, heavenly bottle of wine.

 Even better than when I last tasted this about a year ago, this is mind blowing juice in every sense of the word! There is so much ripe fruit here, it coats your teeth, mouth and gums. This is no shy sister here. The juice is pure liqueur of Grenache! What makes this wine a stunner is that even though the level of concentration is almost off the charts, everything is in balance. The finish must last for at least 60 seconds. It's not exactly graceful, or elegant, but it's a beautiful, memorable expression of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. Less than 5 barrels were produced, so it is going to be hard to find over the coming years.

 Decanted over cocktails. Intense yet not overpowering CdP in modern style with medium-plus body and oodles of black cherry, baking spice, high-toned acid, chewy tannins. Surely a steak-lover's wine and most who enjoy California cults will love this although it's clearly not made from Cabernet. Very enjoyable for sure.

Dark color. The nose shows overripe berries, coffee, figs, hazelnut, preserved cherries, mocha, very compote-like. On the palate opulent, again with very ripe fruit, this is not two but three mouthfuls of wine, extremely lush, ripe-fruity, cooked, fat, without elegance, the tannins are very high quality, the aromatics impressive, but something has gone awry in terms of balance; simply too much of everything. Those who like this opulent style should currently enjoy this wine, but for me personally this wine lies stylistically diametrically opposed to what I imagine a top wine to be.

The Domaine de la Janasse was created in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. La Janasse is the name of the family farm located in Courthézon in the Vaucluse department. This estate is undoubtedly one of the notable references in the Rhône Valley.

In 20 years, the estate has continued to progress and offers excellent country wines as well as beautiful Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées. The success of this estate is a family achievement as the entire Sabon family is invested in it. Domaine de la Janasse Vieilles Vignes 2008 is a cuvée from four plots located on different but complementary terroirs in the blend (a "southern" terroir composed of rolled pebbles that brings richness and power; a terroir located in the same place as Chaupin for freshness and acidity; a terroir of red clay covered with rolled pebbles but very late-ripening as it is located in the north of the appellation, which brings structure and body; and finally, a sandy-limestone hillside that provides finesse). The grape clusters showed extraordinary concentration with well-ripened skins that, like on the Chaupin terroir, fully benefited from the optimal September conditions.
