Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
One of the finest mature Pomerols in my cellar is the 1975 L'Evangile, a wine I have drunk three times this year at the time of writing. Offering up a complex and compelling bouquet of plums, sweet berries, vine smoke, baking spices, fruitcake and truffles, it's full-bodied, satiny and sensual, with melted tannins, ripe acids and a seamless, enveloping profile, concluding with a sapid finish. While it is fully mature today, it appears to be in no danger of imminent decline.

Rust colored, but with a complex nose of root beer, licorice, truffle, earth, spice and smoke. The finish was short and lacked the same level of complexity found in the nose. I imagine there are much better bottles of this wine

This may not have been a good bottle. I thought it didn’t smell quite pristine. It also looked a bit simple – none of the glorious shading of hues that was obvious in the other wines. But it was sleek and harmonious like the Evangile 1985. Sweet, ready with a slightly metallic, disconcerting quality.

Information on the vintage 1975 red Bordeaux: 4/5 Unquestionably better than the three prededing vintage and certainly interesting, not to say challenging. The summer heat and the dryness, whilst helping the sugar content, thickened the skins. It resulted in wines of good fruit with high alcohol content, dark colour and high tannins. It was, still is, the latter which has caused the controversy.

Evangile (L')
The grand vin of Château L'Evangile is described in an old edition of "Grands vins de Bordeaux" (Dussaut editions) as "...full, elegant wines with incomparable bouquet and finesse." For many wine enthusiasts, subtle and elegant quality is indeed the hallmark of this wine.Grape varieties in the wine: 80 to 90% Merlot, 10 to 20% Cabernet FrancAging duration in oak barrels: 18 months, with 70% new barrels.Average annual production: 2,000 to 3,000 cases per year. After a cold and wet winter, high temperatures in March and April favored the start of vegetation. Then, a long, gray, temperate period without excess continued until August, requiring enhanced technical monitoring. The good weather stabilized in early September and eventually favored good and calm grape ripening. This vintage is characterized by a 13-moon year and a longer than normal vegetative cycle.Discreet nose. Very round on the palate, full attack, generous mid-palate. Finish with a solid texture. Very well-integrated oak.
