Wine Enthusiast January - 1998

Almost black in color. Hugely rich, ripe bouquet with dark fruits. A hint of tobacco, plus structured tannins and acidity give the wine shape. The richness and depth of fruit are here, but so also is the ability to age.

Nose of violet and licorice, with a very flavorful palate, but with a sharp edge on the finish.

Tom Cannavan (01-1999) Nicely complex nose of cherry and darker plum fruit, oak and earth. Another lush and full-flavoured wine, but with serious tannins and fine balance. Another star.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
An evolved dark plum/garnet color is followed by captivating, sexy, raspberry, soy, Asian spice, kirsch liqueur, and toasty vanillin aromas. While not a blockbuster, this opulently-textured, medium-bodied effort is a model of elegance, harmony, finesse, and complexity.

First bottle : Pretty dark crimson with already-pale rim. Looks as though there is considerable evolution. Sweet and delicate and very antiquated. Some dusty liquorice. Not without charm but it tasted so old ! Drying finish. Must be a bad bottle, we agree. Jean-Michel says he tasted this recently and it was much, much better. I scored this bottle 15, to drink between 1996 and 2004.

Second bottle : Dark crimson. Fresh, subtle nose. A little fresher than the first bottle. Though not the most charming. Not lifted or exciting. A bit dry on the end. Sweet but drying finish. Some beetroot.

Château La Conseillante
Château La Conseillante

The name La Conseillante first appeared in the mid-18th Century. It was inherited from an influential person who managed the property almost 300 years ago: Catherine Conseillan.

On the Pomerol plateau with a clay-gravel soil with iron deposits in the subsoil, the wine comes from a grape variety that certainly values Merlot (70%), but Cabernet Franc, at 25%, gives the wines a particular freshness, complexity and richness.

La Conseillante with its purple capsule recalls the characteristic perfume of the wine. These elements chosen in 1871 by the Nicolas brothers remain elegantly modern at the dawn of the 21st Century. Since that year, the fifth generation of the Nicolas family has been managing the Château.
