Jancis Robinson December - 2024

Gorgeous fine red wine that was beautifully poised. Sweet but not heavy. Intensely perfumed. Like an especially rich red burgundy. Such a success!

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Rich, intense, full-bodied, concentrated, spicy, sweet, fresh, vibrant layers of kirsch, black pepper, licorice, herbs and meaty nuances, as well as a touch of VA pop as soon as the cork leaves the bottle. The wine exudes spicy kirsch notes from start to finish. Popped and poured there is no reason to wait if you are holding on to any bottles.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
While the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape shows some bricking at the rim and scents of leather, pepper and soy sauce on first opening, be patient with it. With a bit of time in the glass, it blossoms, transforming into a swirl of pressed flowers and ripe cherries. Full-bodied, rich and still packed with potential at age 20, it finishes silky and long, with echoes of licorice and spice. At least based on this bottle, prospective drinkers will want to consider decanting an hour or so in advance.

Jean-Marc Quarin September - 2011

Evolved and clear color. Lovely fine nose, fruity, ripe, vanilla and pure. Silky entry on the palate. Then the wine advances with taste, fruit and fine tannins. Ascending in its structure, it finishes long, flavorful and very difficult to spit out. This will be the best wine of the evening.

Clos Des Papes

Clos des Papes is one of the most emblematic estates of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the southern Rhône Valley. A historic property of the Avril family, it has embodied for several decades a demanding vision deeply rooted in the terroirs of the appellation. The estate has established itself as an essential reference through the consistency of its style, the precision of its viticultural choices, and a comprehensive understanding of Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils.

Now led by Paul-Vincent Avril, named Winemaker of the Year 2026 by La Revue des Vins de France, Clos des Papes exemplifies an approach based on blending terroirs and grape varieties, considered the very essence of the appellation. The estate produces a single cuvée, in both red and white, without segmentation, a rare choice that reinforces the consistency and identity of the wines.

The vineyard extends over approximately 35 hectares, predominantly planted with red varieties, with plantings dominated by Grenache, complemented by a significant proportion of Mourvèdre, as well as Syrah and other traditional grape varieties. Yields are deliberately kept low and vine selection is particularly rigorous.

The wines of Clos des Papes are distinguished by their depth, balance, and remarkable aging potential, combining controlled power with natural elegance. Among the iconic vintages are Clos des Papes 1990, Clos des Papes 2001, Clos des Papes 2006, Clos des Papes 2007, Clos des Papes 2010, Clos des Papes 2011, and Clos des Papes 2016.
