Guide vert 2020 Rayas 2007 has an aromatic profile all its own. Its pure, graceful structure is captivating. The wine has a Burgundian character, with notes of potpourri, peony and sweet spices on the nose, followed by a more floral and fruity palate. Its power is seamlessly integrated, and the finish is long without excessive richness.

Doctorwine : Almost perfect. It is difficult to ask anything more from a great Mediterranean red and such a tout court wine. This is an historic version of Rayas, one which enchanted, almost swept away wine critics around the world. It was a hot year and in the area considered to be less important than 2005. However, these are the conditions where Rayas makes the difference. The color is a very lively ruby-garnet and the aromas are intense and already complex, with notes of raspberry, black cherry, wild strawberry, black pepper and cinnamon. The mouthfeel is bold, rich and, at the same time, elegant, firm and with an excellent persistence. Wait a few years before tasting it.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Opulent, and hedonistic in style, the wine is all about hitting your pleasure buttons with waves of peppery, black cherries, kirsch, garrigue, black plums, and blackberries. The creamy, sensuous finish builds as it lingers.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape was slightly more impressive in its youth, and it's dropped a fair bit of color and is more upfront than I expected. Nevertheless, it's still a beautiful, elegant Rayas that offers classic notes of framboise, flower garden, strawberry jam and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, seductive and elegant on the palate, with that seamless style that's rarely found outside of this address, drink it anytime over the coming decade or more.

Deep garnet red with a slightly lightened rim. A beautiful, expressive nose: fragrant, floral, spicy, playful—wow—cool and smoky, with excellent complexity. Soft, spicy and juicy on the palate from the outset, with cooked strawberries, red currants and garrigue. Many layers; there is quite a bit of alcohol, but also plenty of freshness. Excellent complexity. Already a pleasure to drink, but it can age. Drink now through 2030,

A very elegant, perfumy style, with shiso leaf and mulled spice notes up front, followed by silky black cherry, linzer torte and kirsch flavors that glide through the incense-tinged finish. There's good latent depth and fresh acidity without the headiness typical of the vintage.

We tasted three different ingredients in what will surely be a very famous wine. The first was from ‘the heart of Rayas’ on clay soils around the winery. It was markedly lighter than the Pignan at this stage on the nose but exceptionally rich in weight, while also managing to be racy, sweet and transparent too – as the much more developed Fonsalette had been. The second foudre, filled with wine made from even more clayey soils of Couchon, yielded up a wine with electric energy but one that at the moment was more introvert, while the third was the first–picked lot which even had a note of green along with the richness and animal aromas on the nose but on the palate was extraordinarily sweet and concentrated – yet was probably the chewiest of the three. In fact such was the intensity of the ripe fruit that I hardly noticed tannins at all in the first two samples.

Château Rayas
Château Rayas

Founded in 1880 and passed down within the same family ever since, Château Rayas holds a singular place in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation: its great red wine is a pure Grenache, aged without new oak in old large barrels, on a terroir of fine sands that gives it finesse and freshness rather than power. Rayas's white wine, rare, combines Grenache Blanc and Clairette.

The bottles offered here range from the great solar years — the 1988 wine and the 1990 vintage — to the return to the summit of the 2000s, with the year 2006, the 2010 wine and a more accessible 2011, passing through 2000. So many facets of an estate that has become one of the most sought-after references in the southern Rhône.
