The origins of the estate date back to the 16th century, when Jean and François Gardères, farmers in the region, acquired the first plots. The estate then passed through the hands of the Dabadie family, and later the Fieuzal family. In 1851, upon the death of Lovely Fieuzal, the last descendant of the name, the lands of Fieuzal and Haut-Gardère were united.
At the end of the 19th century, the Ricard family, owners of renowned growths, acquired the estate. Under the Ricard family's leadership, Château de Fieuzal experienced significant development and obtained its grand cru classification.
In 1973, the estate was sold to Georges Nègrevergne, a Bordeaux pharmacist. Under the management of his son-in-law Gérard Gribelin, the vineyard was expanded, the cellars were renovated, and innovative techniques were tested.
In 1994, the Banque Populaire financial group acquired the château. In 1995, the group purchased Château Haut-Gardère, thus reconstituting the original estate.
Since 2001, Château de Fieuzal has been managed by an Irish couple, Brenda and Locklann Quinn. They are committed to perpetuating the unique character of the estate by preserving the typicity of its wines and their authenticity.
Château de Fieuzal is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Gironde. It is situated south of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Garonne. The wine estate spans 75 hectares of vines, located on very old white gravel soil. These gravels are a type of stony and permeable soil that promotes good drainage and root aeration. They also retain the sun's heat, which is beneficial for grape ripening.
The grape varieties grown at Château de Fieuzal are Merlot (48%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Petit Verdot (2%) for red wine production. As for the white wine, the grape varieties consist of Sauvignon Blanc (60%) and Sémillon (40%).
The vines of Château de Fieuzal are on average thirty years old. They are planted at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare. The vines are cultivated using traditional methods, combining sustainable viticulture and manual harvesting. The vineyard is also subject to plot-by-plot management, which consists of adapting cultivation practices according to the characteristics of each plot.
The wines of Château de Fieuzal are aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months. They are marketed 3 to 5 years after harvest.
Château de Fieuzal Rouge is a red wine for aging, characterized by its aromas of red and black fruits, vanilla, and woody notes. It is balanced and elegant, with silky tannins and a long finish.
Fieuzal Blanc is a dry white wine, characterized by its aromas of white fruits, flowers, and minerals. It is fresh and fruity, with nice acidity and a persistent finish.
The best vintages of Château Fieuzal are 1982, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2005, and 2007. The 2009 vintage is considered exceptional.
For white wines, the recommended vintages are 1945, 1947, 1986, and 2009
"L'Abeille de Fieuzal", the estate's second wine, is produced in both red and white, and comes from the selection of young vines from the Château's plots.
The red wines of Château Fieuzal pair perfectly with duck breast, game, mushroom sauce-based dishes, and chocolate desserts.
The white wines of Château Fieuzal are served as an aperitif or to accompany shellfish and fish (especially salmon).
