The harvest of Madeira wine is intense and a big celebration, beginning mid-August through October sometimes even into November, depending on altitude. Traditionally, the grapes are picked by hand, placed in wicker baskets and transported to Lagar (place where they make wine) where the grapes are first crushed barefoot before going in a mechanical press.
