With classic varieties and a distinctive taste derived from an extraordinary process, Madeira wine has become famous and a leader in the global market. The development of Madeira wine began thanks to the rich volcanic soil, favorable climate, and a diversity of grape varieties imported from many places around the world. The Madeira wine harvest is an intense activity and a great celebration, starting in mid-August, lasting until October, sometimes even into November, depending on altitude. Traditionally, the grapes are picked by hand, placed in wicker baskets, and transported to the Lagar (where the wine is made) where the grapes are first crushed barefoot before going through a mechanical press. Today, grapes are still often pressed with feet. However, it is mainly local farmers who follow the tradition.
