The 1870 vintage wines. In Bordeaux, the 1870 vintage, along with 1864 and 1865, is one of the most magnificent of all pre-phylloxera Bordeaux classics. As in 1945, spring frosts reduced the potential harvest and an extremely hot summer increased the sugar content, leading to an early harvest of very ripe and concentrated wines. The best wines from this vintage are Château Lafite Rothschild 1870, Latour 1870, Margaux 1870 and Château Mouton Rothschild 1870. Rather favorable circumstances for the production of old 1870 port wines. While considering the devastation of phylloxera on the harvests, the ports are particularly successful in this vintage.
