Our opinion on the 1923 vintage: a great year for Burgundy wines. The 1923 vintage was a complicated year, but excellent for Burgundy wines. In Bordeaux, spring was cold and wet, followed by a hot summer. The 1923 wines are decent thanks to an initial charm. However, the Sauternes are of slightly superior quality, rich and delicious but some wines have dried out.

In Burgundy, the wines of the 1923 vintage were very successful. According to Jacques Puisais, “it was the century’s second truly great year.” Benefiting from a sunny summer, the reds are supple and mellow. White Burgundies excelled and are of very high quality, though opportunities to taste them are becoming rare.

There were also several successful 1923 Champagnes, despite a small harvest. Opening one can be a gamble, but the wines can still offer an enjoyable, flavorful tasting experience.

Rhône wines are best avoided this year. Producers suffered a second year of serious misfortune, though the 1923 vintage was slightly better than 1922.

Our tips for buying a 1923 wine

The 1923 vintage was unquestionably better in Burgundy, with some surprising premiers crus and grands crus. The wines have a more substantial tannic texture and greater liveliness, giving them staying power. We recommend the Beaune, Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Romanée, Santenay and Savigny-lès-Beaune appellations.

For Champagne, look to the houses of Heidsieck & Co Monopole and Michel.

Each bottle is carefully packed in a protective wine carrier. Order with 24-hour delivery and receive it as soon as the next day. Our team is here to answer any questions. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
