James Suckling February - 2019

An extraordinary wine, even for this very special Grand Cru. So mineral and pure with a gigantic concentration of sour cherries. The extremely fine and racy finish lifts off towards the heavens. You could drink it on release, but this has enormous aging potential.

This wine really pleasantly caught me by surprise in terms of how good a job it did at balancing the classical and modern schools of Burgundy in an interesting wine. Unlike many of the other Gevrey Chambertin GCs sampled on the day, this absolutely had that barnyard sauvage that I was yearning for. The nose is richer than just that, with menthol and slate overlapping, which made for an aromatic profile of a right bank Bordeaux. There is definitely some oak spice here, but it is complimentary rather than dominant.

Light to mid cherry red. There’s a stony mineral finesse to the aroma here, not just fruit. Beautifully dry and fine texture. Succulent, elegant, stony aftertaste.

Domaine Faiveley
DOMAINE FAIVELEY Merchant and owner - 117 hectares, one of the largest in Burgundy - Faiveley, a family-owned house run by François Faiveley, is a unique case. Tasting wines from certain Burgundian négociants might lead one to think that sound management consists of buying poor-quality wine cheaply from winegrowers and spending a lot of money to say: "We are the best!"
