Jeannie Cho Lee December - 2016

The color of this 1959 Coutet is like pure 24-carat gold, deep, rich orange-gold with an amber edge. Sensual and smooth on the palate with a gorgeous bouquet of orange peel with honey, butterscotch and candied lemon rinds. The finish is incredibly long and lingering. Perfect to enjoy now.

Cellar Tracker December - 2023

Toffee and caramel colored; aromatic, nutty, orange marmalade citrus; palate is still slightly sweet but drying out now (Hudak stage 4), nutty, some caramel, some dried fruits; long finish. Really a unique experience to taste a Sauternes at this age. Reminds me of a dry sherry, but not that oxidative. 93, perhaps rating a point higher for the rare experience of tasting a sauternes at this age!

Château Coutet
Château Coutet

Château Coutet is a Bordeaux wine estate located in the Barsac area. The Château has over 38 hectares of vineyards, mainly planted with Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grape varieties. Coutet is a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes in the Sauternes classification of classified growths.

As at Château d'Yquem, the old vertical presses are still in use and the must, after settling, is vinified in new barrels. Château Coutet produces a nectar of exceptional longevity. Under the direction of Marcel Baly since 1977, the wine has gained in liqueur richness, while maintaining its freshness and grace.

The best wines from the Château are the 1929 and 1949 vintages, the 1959 wines, the 1961 vintage, the 1989 vintage, the 1990 classified growths, 2000 grand cru wines and the young 2005 vintage.
