Region Burgundy
Burgundy covers the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais. From Dijon to Mâcon the wines are varietal wine, the reds are from pinot noir and the whites from chardonnay. Today known worldwide, big names contribute very strongly to the world reputation of French wines: Le Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Henri Jayer, Armand Rousseau, Domaine Comte de Vogue ... The great Burgundy wines follow a hierarchical ranking based on qualitative criteria. The regional appellations, communal AOC (called ‘villages‘), Premiers Crus (635 climats: Aux Murgers, Les Pucelles, Les Cras ...) and finally Grands Crus (33 : Echézeaux, Richebourg, Romanée-Conti, Clos des Lambrays...) are the four levels of the pyramid. It is the monks over the centuries who have shaped, studied, exploited the land and established the climats and the crus that we know today. The great vintages in Burgundy for red wines are 1906, 1911, 1919, 1928, 1929, 1934, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1959, 1969, 1990, 1996, 2005, 2009.
