Château Fombrauge is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru property. It is the largest Grand Cru Classé property in the appellation, with a 59-hectare vineyard that produces predominantly Merlot wine.
Fombrauge is four kilometers east of the town of Saint-Emilion, and has existed as a property since the 15th century.
The Fombrauge vineyard has varied soils ranging from clay-limestone on limestone to ferrous deposits and molasse soils. Fombrauge also has a range of different exposures, giving an unusual complexity of terroir for the appellation.
The majority of the vineyard is planted with Merlot (90%), Cabernet Franc about eight percent and Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the rest.
Château Fombrauge is harvested by hand in small crates and is generally cold macerated before fermentation in oak vats. The wines are then aged in French oak vats and barrels, 50% of which are new.
