Our opinion on the 1913 vintage: a complicated but excellent year for Champagne. Like the previous vintage, the 1913 wines are rather classic. However, the taste quality of 1913 wines is slightly above the 1912 vintage. The 1913 vintage wines are now highly sought after by collectors as they are considered rare.
The Bordeaux region experienced a series of misfortunes in 1913, with the arrival of insects and diseases, combined with a cool summer. The result was an abundant but poor quality harvest. The few bottles that have survived to this day offer dry wines with sour flavors.

In Burgundy, 1913 was marked by persistent humidity and a lack of distinct seasons, which harmed the quality of the harvest. The region was also affected by downy mildew, a fungal disease that considerably reduced the quantity of grapes harvested.
The 1913 Champagnes, meanwhile, are of excellent quality, making it a good year for the region. Yields were low, however, which limited the amount of wine produced.
In the Rhône Valley, both 1912 and 1913 are considered poor vintages for wine quality. These two difficult years were not isolated cases, however: many French wine regions experienced weather conditions highly unfavorable to the vines and the production of wines suitable for aging.
The 1913 wines are not especially memorable, and a bottle from that year is unlikely to be chosen for its flavor. Still, placing a 1913 wine on the table is a lovely way to honor a guest or celebrate a special occasion. If you’re looking for a quality drink from 1913, we recommend choosing a Champagne, a spirit or even a Port from that year instead.
