Expert's opinions

17.(1-2003) Cask sample. Very deep colour. Massive amount of fruit and extract. Very sumptuous. Mocha coffee flavours and richness. Rich, sweet and quite dramatic. Rather pinched, astringent, oaky finish. Big, though. Hints of the flirtatious attraction of a top burgundy although perhaps slightly more acidity than one would expect in a truly great grand cru.

(4-2013) A mature yet attractively fresh nose offers up floral, earthy and spicy red berry fruit aromas that are showing traces of secondary development and are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that display a subtle mineral streak before culminating in a complex, balanced and lingering finish where a touch of the wood influence resurfaces. There isn't much unresolved tannin remaining and for my taste this has arrived on the front edge of its peak drinkability though it should remain here for at least another decade. 2001 is an elegant vintage for this wine and I very much like it.

Domaine des Lambrays

The Domaine des Lambrays is an estate located in the Côte de Nuit, in the heart of Burgundy in Morey Saint-Denis. This estate mainly produces red wine and has nearly 11 hectares of vineyards. The grape varieties produced and harvested there are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The estate is particularly renowned thanks to its Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru, of which it has a virtual monopoly.

Domaine des Lambrays is considered one of the best producers of Burgundy wines. The estate's vines are 60 years old. Some of these vines even reach 90 years of age and are still active. The young vines are devoted to Premier Cru Domaine des Lambrays Cuvée Les Loups in Morey-Saint-Denis. The work of the vines remains traditional: the vineyards of the estate are plowed on horseback and the harvest is carried out by hand. Aware of its environmental impact, the estate cultivates its vineyard in sustainable agriculture and turns to biodynamics.
