It is also the southernmost and closest to Bordeaux. The territory of the Margaux appellation is home to 21 of the 61 Grands Crus Classés from the 1855 classification, which places it at the top of all the municipal appellations of the Médoc. It is also the only appellation which bears the name of a 1er Grand Cru Classé : Château Margaux. Its quality is explained by its exceptional terroir which provides one of the most elegant wines in the region. The Margaux terroir, a beneficial soil and climate Margaux terroir’s benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, mild in winter, sheltered from summer heatwaves and with a good distribution of rain throughout the year. Margaux wines are planted on the ridges of Graves, shaped by erosion. The appellation is bordered to the east by the marshes of the estuary and to the west by the forests of the sandy Landes plateau. The soils are composed of gravel and pebbles mixed with more or less clayey sand which contribute to the drainage of rainwater and the penetration of the roots of the vine to draw in the necessary water and nutrients. Grapes are of very good quality. This terroir of the Margaux appellation, with very gravelly soils and a mild maritime climate, allows the grapes to mature slowly, hence the incomparable finesse of its wines. The wines of the appellation of great finesse and predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon Famous for their finesse and elegance, Margaux wines reveal captivating aromatic complexity. First, fruity notes of raspberry, cherry and redcurrant mingle with floral touches, then, spicy nuances and roasted aromas enrich the olfactory palette.
