The 1993 vintage and the wines of Bordeaux

Overall, Bordeaux wines appear better than expected. The summer being hot and stormy, volume and maturity were announced for the best. Then the following months deteriorated. In September, rainfall was three times higher than normal.

Surprisingly, most red wines are excellent, fruity, well covered, balanced, fleshy and tannic. The talented producers have distinguished themselves with concentrated wines, rich in extract, supple and very elegant. The best successes stand out in the Médoc, particularly in the Margaux (Château Margaux 1993), Saint Julien (Château Léoville Las Cases 1993) and Pessac Léognan (La Mission Haut Brion 1993) appellations.

Regarding the 1993 Sauternes, the heavy rains deteriorated the quality of the vintage. The hope of producing a great Sauternes could not be realized. With so much rain, the rot could not be noble.

Burgundy wines of 1993

In Burgundy, the grapes born under the sun and the rain produced wines poor in color but contrasting in quality. The growing season had started well with advanced bud burst and successful flowering. However, the summer was hot and humid with threats of rot which could be avoided with great care and attention.

The reds are more for keeping wines (Louis Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze 1993). As for the whites, they are distinguished by dry and floral wines.

The 1993 vintage in the Rhône Valley

In the Rhône, severe flooding has given wine estates a hard time. As the Northern Rhône suffered, the quality of the vintage suffered. Many diluted and slightly austere wines follow.

Fortunately, the Southern Rhône is raising the bar. In particular, the Côtes du Rhône, which produced high quality wines. The Châteauneuf du Pape appellation enjoyed reasonable success but did not reach the dizzying heights of previous years.

Our opinion on the 1993 vintage champagnes

The Champagne region is the big winner of this vintage with very good successes like the Dom Pérignon 1993. With a mild winter, a hot spring and summer, all the conditions were met to produce exceptional wines. And despite heavy rains in October, the Champagne houses managed to avoid disaster by considerably reducing their yields and carefully selecting the best grapes.

Our 1993 vintage favorites

Dom Pérignon 1993

Dom Pérignon 1993

Rated 92/100 by Wine Enthusiast

« An intense and complex nose of toast, yeast, earth, brine and mushroom opens this luxury cuvée. Medium-bodied and smooth, by Dom Pérignon standards, the palate offers subtle flavors of light green herbs, sweet citrus and honey. Lemon and lime predominate on the long, smooth finish. »

Haut Brion 1993

Château Haut Brion 1993

Rated 92/100 by Robert Parker

« One of the best wines of the vintage, Haut Brion 1993 is dark garnet plum purple in color, rich fragrant, sweet, berry, cassis, mineral, pencil, earthy nose, medium body, concentrated fragrance revealing nothing the harshness of this vintage. This wine offers soft tannins, good length, and exceptional purity. »
