Cellar Tracker May - 2024

So expressive on the bouquet, zesty-smoky-piney, filled with capsicum, fresh herbs and braised greens. Really the only quibble was a touch of dilution on the midpalate but otherwise it was en fuego and probably at its putative peak.

A real fruit-bomb, with expressive aromas of currants, blackberries and vanilla. Full-bodied and chunky, with masses of fruit and well-knit tannins.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
This accessible, yet tannic example of Sociando-Mallet possesses a deep rubypurple color, and excellent aromatics consisting of jammy black cherries, blackberries, and cassis, as well as subtle notes of minerals, earth, and new oak. This is a deep, long, muscular, tannic wine that is structurally similar to the 1996. Patience will be required from purchasers of this high class wine.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Firm, crisp, crunchy, red fruit, strict tannins and a strong note of cedar, herbs green pepper, tobacco leaf, cranberry and red plums are on the nose and palate. This is very old-school in nature, so some will like this more than I did.

Not decanted. Dark color, good intensity, evolved. Ripe-style fruity nose. Caressing and fruity palate on one side, but finishing harsh. Medium length.

Mid crimson. Pale rim. Well melded, very well behaved, polite nose. Still rather callow but all is in the right place for evolution even if there is no enormous intensity. A real diplomat. Meaning a little bit low key. Slightly chunky tannins at present.

Château Sociando Mallet
Château Sociando-Mallet Cru Bourgeois, a wine from Haut-Médoc in Gironde. Château Sociando-Mallet is a wine prized by fine wine enthusiasts, as evidenced by its annual success in en primeur sales. Jean Gautreau's wine is one of the great overlooked wines from the 1855 classification. Because it is not officially part of the nobility of classified growths of the Médoc - even though it competes with more than a few - Château Sociando-Mallet must remain modest in terms of pricing. It thus offers one of the best value-for-money ratios among all great Bordeaux wines!
