Deep crimson – looks very healthy and nuanced. Heady and almost medicinal on the nose. Very fresh and lively. Most appetising and succulent. Not overdone – just what you want of young claret. This is the first vintage (since 1969 tasted to the present) that doesn't seem quite ready yet. Great balance in lively key.

Tasted in New York. It is very difficult to find yourself in a blind tasting behind Pichon Lalande and Lafite Rothschild. The organizers put this wine in the most delicate of positions. It has the simplest nose of all the wines present. In particular, I was bothered by its green pepper note. On the other hand, whilst being behind Lafite, this wine shows a very beautiful entry on the palate and even smoothness in the middle. The body remains moderately powerful. It has the slender form of Cabernet Sauvignon that was not picked fully ripe. In line with what the nose suggested, the grain of the tannin is a little firm on the finish due to lack of maturity. But this wine remains of a very good standard. It would surely be extraordinary if it had been harvested later.

Medium garnet center with some orange bricking at the rim. This has a stunningly complex “old school” nose of green tobacco, mint, barnyard, earth, and red fruits such as cherry and raspberry. The palate is equally complex with tart cranberry, tobacco, mint, cedar, and rosemary throughout the long finish. Unsurprisingly, medium-bodied on the palate with supportive acidity and fully integrated tannins that provide a rounded mouthfeel to this perfectly aged wine. Consumed with medium rare steak, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and dinner rolls for Thanksgiving. It paired well with everything, including the asparagus, because the herbal backbone matched the rosemary in the steak as well as the greenness of the asparagus. Overall, this is why I age Bordeaux. It was great with food and on its own, and while I do not love underripe wines, I can appreciate a touch of green for complexity.

Classic, old school styled wine, with firm, strict tannins and a strong, cedar, tobacco, leaf, green pepper and cassis nose. Full bodied, but with an austere, stiff leaning, you can either drink this now, or age it further, for more secondary character.

Dark-colored, with vanilla, spice and smoky fruit flavor. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a silky texture. A stylish wine, showing spicy character. Sociando did the business this year.

Château informations
Château Sociando-Mallet Cru Bourgeois, a wine from Haut-Médoc in Gironde. Château Sociando-Mallet is a wine prized by fine wine enthusiasts, as evidenced by its annual success in en primeur sales. Jean Gautreau's wine is one of the great overlooked wines from the 1855 classification. Because it is not officially part of the nobility of classified growths of the Médoc - even though it competes with more than a few - Château Sociando-Mallet must remain modest in terms of pricing. It thus offers one of the best value-for-money ratios among all great Bordeaux wines!
