(3-2009) The 1996 Dom Ruinart is particularly large-scaled for this generally subtle wine, an impression that was reinforced when I tasted a large number of vintages a few months ago. This is a bold, weighty Dom Ruinart that continues to change in the glass, revealing new shades of its smoke and mineral-infused fruit with every taste. The 1996 is a particularly good vintage for Dom Ruinart, and also one of the more accessible Champagnes of that year.

Wonderful energy and tension and vibrancy on the nose, lots of acidity too. This is real wake-up champagne! Still extremely youthful though it doesn't seem as dense as the 1998. More transparent and ethereal, though with wonderful persistence. A sort of fiery-willed ballet dancer. Not big but very determined.

Champagne Ruinart is a Champagne House created on September 1st, 1729 in Reims by Nicolas Ruinart, the nephew of Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart. It is one of the oldest Champagne houses still in operation, after the Gosset house, founded in 1584.
