Tom Cannavan January - 2019

From a legendary vintage, this second-growth Margaux is absolutely exemplary classic Bordeaux: only 12.5% alcohol and a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, at 33 years old the colour is surprisingly dense and ruby at the core, the broad rim only just fading to pink/amber. Heavenly, pure classic nose of pencil shavings and truffle, a little dried blood note and plenty of black, small berry fruits. There is perfume to spare here, from the gamey to the floral. Decanted for half an hour or so, it is clearly a wine just edging towards the downslope, the tannins a little dry, a bit of brick dust character, but is gives such pleasure and is such a terrific wine. Balancing meatiness, elegance, firmness and yielding softness so well, it has sweet fruit on the mid-palate but does dry just slightly towards the long finish, suggesting it should be drunk up soon to enjoy this gorgeous wine at its best.

With 3 hours of air, the tannins softened and scents of cassis, flowers, tobacco and truffle bloomed. Classic, in the good sense, with depth, complexity, length and character, there is a lot to like about the wine. Interestingly, it combines power, masculine character and softness as part of its charms. Drink now, with a few hours of decanting, or wait another 5 to 10 years to see what happens.

The color is red, dark and evolved. Decanted, the nose appears intense, complex and fine, very fruity and above all pure. It caresses the entry, developing fruity, very tasty, slender, melting, spicy, with great balance. It finishes Pinot style, very aromatic with fine tannins. I admit that I would be curious to know which plots of Rauzan Segla made this particularly successful 86, delicious to drink today.

Last bottle, best bottle... 45 minutes in decanter and it blossomed. Big and full but soft, a lovely mature Margaux. A treat to drink.

Dark crimson garnet, delicate ocher rim, water rim. On the nose, delicately animalic, dark berry fruit, Amarena cherries, licorice, slightly dusty bouquet (not entirely clear and precise). Juicy, sweet, ripe plums, present, powerful tannins, black cherries and some licorice, extract-sweet aftertaste, good accompaniment to food, delicate bitter chocolate, a touch dry on the finish.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1986 Rauzan-Segla is held up as one of the best wines of that decade. Now at 30 years old, it has an initially tightly wound bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass. It eventually offers exquisite aromas of small red cherries, cranberry jus, confit dates and briary, a hint of sandalwood tucked underneath. You would never describe the aromatics as "explosive" but it seems to gain in intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savory entry. There is good structure here, but there is a sweet seam of fig and candied orange peel that to be honest, does not quite match the personality of the wine. My hunch is that this Rauzan-Segla is approaching the end of its drinking plateau, but any "decline" is going to be gradual and graceful. Drink now if you can, though I am certain large format bottles will have much more to offer. Tasted July 2016.
