(11-1989) Very good, with backbone and structure for aging. Purple color; leather, barnyard, vanilla and berry aromas; full-bodied, with lots of focused tannins and a long finish.

(01-1997) Deep polished ruby-colored, with a polite, restrained aromatic profile, this vintage, so disappointing in the northern Rhone, has turned out a surprisingly pleasant La Chapelle. Although understated when compared to the great vintages, the wine exhibits more depth and ripeness than the 1987, medium body, sharp tannin in the finish, good purity, and some of the noted cassis, cedar, and pepper characteristics that this wine can offer.
