I am always blown away by the 1959 Mouton, one of the greatest Moutons made in the last thirty-five years. Every time I have this wine it is undeniable that Mouton made a richer, more persuasive wine in 1959 than in 1961. Astonishingly young and unevolved, with a blackpurple color, the wine exhibits a youthful nose of cassis, minerals, and new oak. It is exceptionally powerful and super-extracted, with the fruit supported by high levels of tannin and some lusty quantities of alcohol. This mammoth, full-bodied Mouton-Rothschild should continue to evolve for another 20-30 years. It may well be a 100-year wine! Last tasted 397.

Wonderfully sweet but this still seemed so youthful! Admittedly it had been in the decanter only an hour or two but it's a brooding hulk that still has masses to give. Glorious but much more structured than the 1961, long decanted, served alongside.

Mouton Rothschild

Purchased in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, Brane Mouton became a legend under the name of Mouton-Rothschild. With the advent of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chateau Mouton Rothschild became the truly monumental 1er Cru it is today. In addition to the construction of cellars and buildings, and the ascension to 1er Cru status, it is the passion of a lifetime manifested in action by this remarkable man. Ranked Second Cru in 1855, it is now, since 1973, a premier cru classe. His motto became "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change." The elegance and magic of this wine has charmed the most important contemporary artists who each year, illustrate their an original work of art on the label of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Chateau D'Armailhac and Chateau Clerc Milon followed suit in the quality of the Rothschild family.
