For the creation of the label of the Premier Cru Classé Château Mouton Rothschild 2008, the famous Chinese painter Xu Lei was chosen. His design for Mouton takes up the classic theme of the ram, emblem of the vintage. The ram of Xu Lei, perched on its rock, between two quarter moons, affirms the role of this great wine in the links between people and cultures, from one hemisphere to another.
Château Mouton Rothschild 2008 is powerful and intense, and reveals silky and velvety tannins. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot.

Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2008 Mouton Rothschild has always been in the shadow of the ensuing couple of vintages, but I was not the only person at this tasting that commented upon the class in show here. It replicated previous showings: cedar and graphite present and correct, though accompanied by something a little more exotic - eucalyptus maybe? The palate is beautifully balanced, very detailed and extremely fresh. This conveys so much energy and animation before reverting towards a more classic and structured, pencil lead finish. Those in the know will stash up on the 2008 Mouton Rothschild because it is destined to turn into one of the "dark horses" of the decade.

Intensives Bukett, ätherische Nuancen von Minze, Eukalyptus, ein Hauch von Teer, sehr exotisches Aroma, florale Anklänge an Lilien und Veilchen, dunkle Beerenfrucht unterlegt. Saftig, fast opulent und rund, finessenreich strukturiert, gute Tannine, die sich integriert präsentieren, reife Herzkirschen im Abgang, elegant, süß und anhaltend, nähert sich einer ersten Antrinkphase, jedenfalls mit dieser Nase ein unverwechselbarer Mouton.

Truffles, wet earth, tobacco wrapper, forest floor and leafy notes add to the nuances. Full bodied, firm, tannic and classically styled, the wine is still austere. There is plenty of fruit buried below the wall of tannins, but you will need time for the tannins to subside. This will take at least 10-15 more years before it is civilized.

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only estate in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate — then known as Brane-Mouton — became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars, and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change."

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 vintages to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild rank among the most coveted in the world of wine. The estate complements its grand wine with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
