CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD Magnum 1983

The Château Mouton Rothschild 1983 label was created by painter Saul Steinberg. A work that represents an empty beach where man is no more than a speck on the horizon, pastel-tinted skies where the sun is represented by trompe-l'oeil stamps. It is this new look at the world, both peaceful and disenchanted, expressed by his design for the label of this marvelous Pauillac.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1983 is a very fruity, remarkably balanced wine, bringing length, amplitude and aromatic fullness. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Wine Spectator October - 1994

Super-refined 1983 Bordeaux with an excellent deep ruby color and intense cigar-box, plum and berry aromas and flavors; there's even a hint of mint. It's full-bodied but very reserved in style with fine tannins and a seductively long finish.

Tom Cannavan (01-1999) Wonderful to have a chance of adding to my experience of the '83 clarets, as I think I've now tasted all first and second growths apart from Lafite. Colour is a solid, dark ruby. The nose offers up gorgeous scents of rich blackcurrant with lovely complexity of mocha coffee, pencil-shavings and spice. There's a distinct aroma of black olive that adds an edge. The palate is medium-bodied and very graceful, with a warmth of black fruits and sweet oak, easy tannins and really tremendous length. The whole picture is very subtle and multi-layered. This is a truly lovely wine, whose charms reveal themselves more slowly than the Monte Bello.

Dark crimson and rather luxurious-looking. Very polished and sumptuous – beautifully-knit nose. Very polished tannins and quite a bit of tannin tucked away on the end. Not heavy but a class act. First-growth quality confirmed. Super fresh and clean on the finish. At peak now. Not that concentrated.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The classic Mouton lead-pencil, cedary nose has begun to emerge. This medium dark ruby, elegant, medium-bodied wine will never be a great or legendary Mouton. The flavors are ripe and moderately rich. With good depth and some firm tannins to resolve, this offering from Mouton is bigger and richer than the 1981, 1979, or 1978. Austere by the standards of Mouton and the vintage, the 1983 resembles the chateau's fine 1966. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only wine from the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, after having been initially classified as Second Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then named Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascension: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by renowned contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This quest for excellence is also found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:
