Expert's opinions
Deep, dark and rich in color, this stunning wine knocks on perfection. With incredible levels of concentration, the unctuous wine completely coats your palate with flavor. Thick, rich and intense, yet, everything is harmonious. The finish lasts for close to 60 seconds with its licorice, coffee bean, black, red and blue fruit, liqueur like profile. Impossible to find, yet worth the effort and expense to track a bottle or two of this majestic elixir of Chateauneuf du Pape.

The tiny production 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape la Plume du Peintre is a monumental wine. Coming all from the La Crau lieu-dit and made from 100% Grenache aged 30% in small barrels and 70% in stainless steel tanks, it offers massive amounts of cassis, blueberry, licorice, graphite and spice, full-bodied richness, building tannin and a youthful, unevolved profile that’s hard to believe. It won’t hit maturity for another 4-5 years and will keep through 2035+. This is a singular Châteauneuf du Pape that I wish every reader could taste; unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to find in the market.

A stunning combination of density and purity, with a nearly distilled essence of kirsch and blackberry fruit that's layered with exotic fig, graphite, licorice and spice cake notes. The long finish is full throttle, yet racy and balanced. 100 percent Grenache. Best from 2009 through 2035.

Dark inky purple-black color to the edge. Black cassis, graphite, mocha, sweet spicy. Seriously full bodied, extremely concentrated, long finish with great grip.

Mid ruby with rust rim. Some freshness on the nose. But pretty light and inconsequential before some definite astringency. Bit of a waste of effort?
