I am certainly not going to argue with anyone who believes La Mission-Haut-Brion's 1989 is every bit as profound as the 1989 Haut-Brion. It is a spectacular wine, and as it ages in the bottle, it is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite La Mission-Haut-Brions, ranking alongside the 1982, 1975, 1961, 1959, and 1955. The 1989 boasts a dense, thick, purple color, followed by a sweet, roasted cassis, chocolatey-scented nose with whiffs of tobacco, tar, and minerals. The wine is extremely full-bodied, unctuously-textured, sweet, jammy, and rich. Although it is still a youthful, unformed wine, it is already delicious to drink. It should develop additional bottle bouquet by the turn of the century, after which it will drink well for 15-20 years.

Upon opening, one is invaded by smoke scents and toast. Then come the precious woods, tobacco and minerals. The mouth is perfectly balanced, dense and gentle at the same time. Exceptional length. Unquestionably one of the greatest wines tasted this year.

Blockbuster. This is incredibly impressive with aromas of plums, berry, tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Still closed, but so opulent and beautiful. Raspberry aftertaste. Lasts for minutes. I underrated this years ago. Clearly 100 points.

Mission Haut Brion
Mission Haut Brion

The Château La Mission Haut-Brion, is a vineyard located in Talence in Gironde. Located in AOC Pessac-Léognan, it is classified Grand Cru in the classification of wines of Graves. The estate was bought in 1983 by the Dillon family, owner of Haut Brion. It is undoubtedly this propensity to give everything at once that distinguishes the wines of La Mission Haut-Brion and seduces many tasters. It is also the exacerbated expression of the soil of Graves of Pessac. In the course of its breeding and getting older, the Mission Haut-Brion is always generous, it is committed totally permanently. The hedonistic side of the Mission Haut-Brion and the permanence of these qualities are features that make it very attractive. La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion is the second wine of the domain.
