CHÂTEAU MALARTIC LAGRAVIERE 2009

Tasting note: The 2009 vintage benefited from superb, even ideal conditions! Winter and spring were dry and temperate. Flowering occurred uniformly and with exceptional speed for all grape varieties at the end of May, followed by harmonious veraison. The combination of positive factors - an essential condition for the composition of fine and elegant tannins - (homogeneous veraison, sun and heat counterbalanced by cool nights, ideal hygrometry) has rarely been achieved in this way in 30 years, especially during the crucial months of August, September and early October! Reinforced by the cultivation practices implemented since 1997 at the Château (sustainable agriculture, monitoring of maturity plot by plot, sparing treatments...), the 2009 Malartic-Lagravière, both Red and White, endowed with immense potential, will undoubtedly have a great future!

Grape variety/Blend: merlot (56%), cabernet sauvignon (41%), petit verdot (3%), cabernet franc (1%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Aging: In barrels for 18 to 24 months

Maturity: (2019-2040) Ready to drink or to keep

Food and Wine Pairing: The red wines of Château Malartic-Lagravière pair wonderfully with truffle or porcini mushroom-based dishes, duck, and also with Camembert cheese with Calvados.

Andreas Larsson - Tasted
Pure and mineral nose, wet stones, tobacco, wild berries, blackcurrant and fine leather, the palate is rather massive and concentrated with layers of dark fruit, high level of fine tannin, a bright freshness and supreme length, great purity and potential.

Great poise and character, these were the years when Malartic was taking a step up, and the 2009 has more than stood the test of time. Supple tannins that have a hidden kick, with a punch of dark fruits layered behind. Great stuff, enjoyable, fresh but confident signoff of concentrated blackcurrant puree and cigar box.

Wine Enthusiast January - 2012

Almost sweet in its richness, this is a deliciously fruity wine. The structure and tannins are almost buried among all of the velvety fruits, ripe berry flavors and layered wood notes. That said, it still has complexity and richness that promise aging, with the final acidity giving some brightness.

Luscious, richly textured, round, forward and velvety, the wine is concentrate, silky, smoky and fresh. You can drink this young, if you like forward styled fruits and silky tannins, or you can easily wait a decade for more secondary notes. Either way, this is just great stuff.

Tasted blind. Dark blackish crimson. Rather low-key smudgy nose. Round and flattering in an Ornellaia sort of way. Very glamorous. Just a tiny bit overripe perhaps but still fairly appetising. Thick, sweet and inky with good concentration. Long.

Dark, intense and beautiful color. Fruity, animal and very ripe nose. Note of leather. Soft entry on the palate then the wine develops aromatic, juicy and rich in the middle. It finishes flavorful and long on a very beautiful finish evoking the class of Cabernet Sauvignon. Beautiful wine.

Dark robe. The nose reveals great finesse, delicious fruity notes and toasted, mineral and smoky notes. On the palate, the volume is substantial and the tannins are very silky. The fruit is present from the attack and benefits from long aging.

Packed and very backward, with taut tobacco, iron and bittersweet cocoa notes up front, while the core of crushed plum, roasted fig and cassis flavors is held in reserve. Lots of chalky grip marks the finish, where the fruit drips in the background.
