It retained some red fruit (cranberry, cherry and red currant) along with a faint hint of old leather. Some secondary development. Although not an esteemed vintage, I thought it was quite pleasant with dinner.

Hard, tannic and medium-bodied, this wine isn't showing much now; hints of rich, plummy and black currant fruit, ample oak and tannin to warrant a few years cellaring.

Strange rather musty mothball nose and dried out and hard on the finish.

Château Leoville Poyferre
Château Leoville Poyferre

Château Léoville Poyferré is a Bordeaux wine estate. Under the Saint Julien appellation, it is classified as a second growth in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

During the reign of Louis XIII, in 1638, Master Jean de Moytié, an ennobled Bordeaux bourgeois and counselor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, owned a vineyard planted on a gravel hill near the River. This gave the place the name "Mont-Moytié", following the custom of the time to designate a place by the name of its owner. The Mont-Moytié cru was part of these first historical growths of the Médoc, all born before the Fronde (1648-1653). The Médoc was then giving birth to its first parish growths.

This beautiful vineyard, originating from the former Léoville estate in northern Saint-Julien, is one of the best terroirs of the appellation and certainly the richest of the second growths. The 80 hectares planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc produce a deep and rich wine.

Château Léoville Poyferré produces elegant, very fine, balanced, and complex wines with intense color and velvety texture, which have excellent aging potential.
