Expert's opinions

Wine Spectator April - 1988
Wine Spectator
Firm, lean and structured with rich, ripe concentrated cassis, currant and plum fruit that's polished and full-bodied, finishing with vanilla and plum. The tannins are in proportion, finishing firm and dry.

Falstaff January - 2010
Falstaff
Medium ruby garnet, wider ocher rim. In the nose, subtle smoky nuances of cassis and blackberry fruit, a hint of grapefruit zest and nougat, inviting bouquet. Fresh on the palate, elegant texture, delicately spicy body, mineral notes and persistent, delicately salty, appears youthful, fine black berry fruit on the finish, good aging potential.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Fully mature, medium bodied wine that is more interesting on the nose, with its cigar box, truffle, black cherry and tobacco driven perfume, than on the soft, gentle, slowly starting to fade palate. This is not a wine to hold. If you have a bottle in your cellar, it needs drinking.

Jancis Robinson May - 2009
Jancis Robinson
Really nutty and toasty on the nose. Smells quite young for its age. Cedary and very fresh on the palate. A Peter Pan wine on the nose though shows its age more on the palate. Smooth but a little drying on the finish.

Château Leoville Poyferre
Château Leoville Poyferre

The Château of Léoville Poyferré is a second classified growth of Médoc classification in 1855.

During the reign of Louis XIII in 1638, Master John Moytié, ennobled bourgeois Bordeaux and adviser to the Parliament of Bordeaux, had planted a vineyard on a mountain of graves near the river. This place earned the name "Mount Moytié" according to the use of time to designate a place by the name of its owner. Mount Moytié was part of the first historic growths of the Medoc, all born before the Fronde (1648-1653). The Médoc was giving birth to her first parish estates. This beautiful wine from the old Leoville estate north of St. Julien is one of the best terroirs of the appellation and surely the richest of the second growths.

The 80 hectares planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, give a deep, rich wine.  The Chateau Leoville Poyferre produces elegant wines, very fine, balanced and complex, intense color, and velvety texture, and is disposed to have a very good aging potential.
